2 drunk 2 care:
Earlier this month, Hallandale Beach native Kayla Mendoza was charged with DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide for her role in the deaths of Kaitlyn Ferrante and Marisa Catronio. Mendoza, 21, has since garnered a great deal of national attention, much of which has focused on her partying lifestyle.
On November 17, Mendoza went out for drinks with co-workers from her T-Mobile sales job. Even though she was 20 years old at the time, her boss, Marcelo Bruzzo, told her to come along anyway. “My manager, Marcelo, invites me to go to a restaurant that my coworkers were going to,” Mendoza said. “We were all going to hang out. So my car was left at T-Mobile and I rode with him in his car to the restaurant.”
After having some drinks with coworkers at a Mexican restaurant in Coral Springs, Bruzzo dropped Mendoza off at her car. Unfortunately, she was in no condition to drive and ended up going the wrong way on the Sawgrass Expressway. Eventually, she crashed her Hyundai Sonata head-on into Ferrante's Toyota Camry, killing both passengers. Mendoza, who sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision, has been confined to a wheelchair for weeks. At the time of her arrest, she had a blood-alcohol content of .15, which is well over the legal limit of .08.
Shortly after the accident, news started to spread that Mendoza had tweeted out “2 drunk 2 care” hours before the crash. In other tweets, Mendoza bragged about her “Pothead Princess” lifestyle, claiming that her car “permanently” smelled like weed. Earlier in the week, she had also tweeted that she wasn't able to go to sleep without smoking a “bedtime blunt.”
Of course, Mendoza has since tried to distance herself from those tweets, saying they weren't indicative of how she felt about driving drunk. “It did not mean, 'I'm too drunk to care, I'm going to get in my car now and wherever the hell I end up, that's it.' ” The tweet, according to Mendoza, was aimed at her boyfriend, whom she had been fighting with all day.
In recent interviews, Mendoza has seemed remorseful about the devastation she's caused. “I wish there was something I could say to make up for what happened, Mendoza explained. “But no matter how many 'sorrys,' apologies, tears I cry – no matter how much I hate myself for what happened, nothing I say will change anything.”
Intoxicated driver kills skateboarder:
Jody Arcuri, 31, turned herself in this Wednesday after it was discovered that she was under the influence of alcohol, methamphetamine, and prescription pills when she struck and killed a pedestrian back in February. According to witnesses, Arcuri was using her cell phone when she slammed into 22-year-old Stephen Michael Wilson, who was skateboarding in the area. The force of the collision killed Wilson instantly, snapping his skateboard and sending his body through the air.
In the aftermath of the collision, Arcuri appeared visibly shaken and confused. Although she told law enforcement that she had blacked out prior to the crash, witnesses saw her talking or texting on her phone right before she struck Wilson. Upon impact, Wilson's body careened off the hood of Arcuri's car, shattering the windshield and breaking off a side-view mirror.
When police arrived at the scene, they found a crack pipe in Arcuri's possession that later tested positive for cocaine. In addition to the crack pipe, they also found marijuana and prescription drugs. Eventually, Arcuri agreed to take breathalyzer and blood tests. She was found to have a blood-alcohol content of .092, which is over the .08 limit.
Arcuri is currently being held on $50,000 bond and is scheduled to make a court appearance today.
